If there was ever any doubt that 2019 was the year for Nigerian Hiphop, the L.A.M.B cypher 2019 featuring Loose Kaynon, A-Q, M.I and Blaqbonez dealt a major blow to any such doubt.

N.B:

A Cypher or Cipher is the act of freestyle rapping through acapella or on instrumental beats. The rap is ‘free of style’, and can be improvised or previously written.

The Breakdown…

BLAQBONEZ

Months after dropping his BadBoyBlaq album, Blaqbonez has proven he is king of the new school rappers in Nigeria. The young rapper took up the challenge of starting first in a cypher with Veterans and faired better than was expected.

His opening lines, “Blaqbonez one of the few that’s really rapping, I be handing out Ls to these rappers they know I’m snapping…” is just a lyrical representation of Blaqbonez’ battle ready style of rap.

With impeccable delivery and saucy punchlines, he was able to keep listeners interested in all he had to say. He however could not miss the opportunity to pay respect to M.I when he said

“I’m next to be king, impartially ought to be sitting but I’m waiting for M…”

LOOSE KAYNON

Loose, known for his laid back style of rapping did not disappoint on the cypher. Being one that is very good with wordplay, he was able to claim his position on the Hiphop scene.

The lines that’s found most intriguing was ” Was fucking broke for a while so I exed her, success had a boyfriend I got her number and texted her, she called me ordinary I said my first name was extra…”

A-Q

The next rapper needs no introduction…” is no lie when it comes to A-Q. He has established himself as a well known lyrical menace. Known for his story telling style of rap with deep punchlines and wordplay, A-Q showed an ability to thread on current issues when he said “Making rappers madder than modern day feminists”

“How you taking shots with a Sub par album? Those joints ain’t strong enough you lack calcium…” tells of A-Q’s ability to deal heavy blows effortlessly.

M.I Abaga

“Sometimes rapping isn’t fun at all. There’s nothing I can brag about I’ve done it all…”

M.I kicks off his verse with an unusual bragability and a reiteration of his “I am the king of Naija Hiphop” stance.

M.I delivered some heavyweight type punchlines garnished with wit and intellect.

I told you rappers to fix up look at the way you niqqas rapping now, S.A rappers winning but guess what Naija is back in town…”

In his concluding lines, he went below the belt on other rappers and The Martell brand’s opposition – Hennessey. He also hinted at the continuation of the Martell Cypher.

” Four more bars for my dawgs I got it

Loose and A-Q we should make this episodic

Only open for rappers who deliver product

And yet that other cognac this is how you spend your budget, fuck it”.

M.I’s show of brilliance stands unmatched.

Overall,

A-Q’s verse got more people talking across social media and personally I think he did better than the other three. I mean M.I is still king but sometimes the protege gets to outperform the master.

With this and many more Hiphop projects to drop this January, it is safe to say 2019 looks like it’s going to be a great year for Nigerian Hiphop – Artists and fans alike.
